STOP: Pause before you trust it

Do not copy, cite or share it yet. Ask yourself whether it sounds too neat, too confident or too convenient.

Example: An AI answer quotes a study with an exact percentage that fits your argument perfectly.

Step 3 · Try

Real or fake?

Use STOP, SOURCE, CROSS-CHECK and TOOLS on a few AI outputs, then look closely at a real-world case from Malaysia.

Try

Real or Fake?

10 points
Decide whether each AI output is real or fake. Finish all of them to complete the activity.
One reference in this activity was invented on purpose so you can practise spotting fabricated sources.

An AI chatbot says: "The Malaysian flag, the Jalur Gemilang, has 14 red and white stripes."

Is this real or fake?

Malaysian case study

Case study: errors in AI-generated Malaysian flag images

In Malaysia, there have been public reports of published images showing the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, with errors, including images made with generative AI tools. [TO BE ADDED: the specific incident, its date and the news source. Verify before publishing.]

Why it happens

Image generators create pictures that look plausible. They do not check details against an official design, so small but important features, such as the number of stripes or the points on a star, can come out wrong.

Cite it right

Acknowledge and cite AI use

Being open about AI use protects your integrity. Here is how to say what you used, why, and how you checked it.

How to acknowledge AI use

When your course allows AI, you may need to say how you used it. A good acknowledgement answers three questions: which tool, what for, and how you checked it.

Example template

“Generative AI ([tool]) was used to [purpose]. All content was reviewed, edited and verified by the author.”

Reference list pattern for an AI tool
